Humans

Humans are varied and diverse. The following are ethnic groups / villages in the area that are predominantly human, but any race can come from these villages as well. Consider taking the versatile heritage (human) to represent this.

Bekyar

a group of humans who largely worship devils and practice in slave trading. Only play them if you are playing against type (excellent for devil sorcerers or oracles who want to fight against their upbringing).

Bonuwat

A group of seafaring traders. Big focus on sailors, navigating (by sea), trading, etc. Anything sea-based would be good. Azarketi (while technically further northwest than this tribe) fits this type of character (in terms of ancestry feats).

Caldaru

Capitalists, merchants, and engineers. Sailing as well. Caldarus and Bonuwats have a friendly relationship due to shared interests in maritime trade. Consider taking a wealthier background for students (such as sponsored by a family).

Mauxi

If you take the Mauxi ancestry, you gain access to Shory Aeromancer and Shory Aerialist uncommon ancestry feats. This is a mixture of Osirian, Thuvian, and greater Mwangi culture. The older generation considers themselves more like Thuvian and Osirian (their government is heavily inspired by the Osirian culture and gods) while the younger generation considers themselves part of the Mwangi. While there is a generational divide politically, local families still, at least outwardly, show respect to their elders and traditions. If you pick this background, take on an Osirian name and you may take on Osirian gods and cultures.

Sargavan

Former colonizers and slavers. Typically pale to white skin, these are descendants from Chelaxian colonists from a nation that no longer exists. There are now two groups within the Sargavans, those who wish to return to their former glory as a slave empire and those who wish to move on to a different future for their people. Either way, they are widely distrusted by everyone except the pirates and the Aspis Consortium. If you take this, you can take Chelaxian lore as one of your lore choices.

Vidric

This group is unlike most any other. Instead of a long history in a particular region, the Vidrics are a people taken away. After the Vidric Revolution, this group was formed out of former slaves and “servants” of the Sargavan. Your alignment should be chaotic as your people know of the treachery of the Bekyar people who happily sold them into slavery to the Sargavans not so long ago, widely considered immoral but legal.

Zenj

This represents the majority population in the Mwangi Expanse. If you pick this race, start the adventure with a necklace of special beads, indicating your own special story. If you are a spellcaster, one of the beads is made out of a special magical substance that glows the color of your favorite school of magic.

Zenje are the nomadic tribes of the Savanna. Typically a matriarchal democracy involving a hunt in which the women hunt a predator, kill it, and use every part of its body to demonstrate how she can serve as the leader of the tribe in all aspects. Animal skins indicate not only tribe, but also wealth and station. The leader is distinguished by her outfit as it is the predator she killed as part of the presidential campaign.

Zenju are the village people of the jungles. Many have adopted a vegetarian lifestyle and are widely regarded as excellent herbalists and doctors. Their knowledge of cooking and poison identification is the best on the continent. If you take this as your background, it is heavily encouraged to take training in nature, medicine, or cooking lore. The herbalist archetype is a great pick for this type of character.

The Elephant People

Descended from the Osirion and Mauxi, this group believes in the Osirion worship of elephants (an ancient tradition no longer practiced in Osirion). To them, there is an ancient unnamed god who sent the elephants as a test. It is their job to protect and follow the elephants. They have a special relationship to the Ekujae Elves, frequently working together.

Lirgeni

The People of the Stars. This group lost most of their ancient cities to the Eye of Abendego (prophesied to return), and now are a wandering group of people, except for a large diaspora that lives in the city of Jaha. Known as scholars, many of them study astrology in an attempt to predict the future in the belief they can stop the Eye of Abendego. Note: This is an excellent race to pick for a scholar style character. Also, you will gain a special downtime activity known as “Contact Kin” if you are in a large enough settlement.

Uomoto

If you take the Uomoto ancestry, you gain access to Shory Aeromancer and Shory Aerialist uncommon ancestry feats. Your people also have a history with local eagles. Consider taking an eagle as your spiritual animal. These people live near the mysterious ruins of Kho (see Barrier Wall down below in the Regions tab). As such, they have an unusually high number of sorcerers born in their tribe. If you take this race, consider one of the following background styles. Note, due to equality, all Uomoto wear long-sleeves (robe, shirt, your choice). Note, these are not necessarily mutually exclusive (such as a sorcerer tinkerer). Taking an archaeologist archetype is an excellent way to roleplay this group of people as well. You were born a sorcerer in the Uomoto tribe. You start the game with a ceremonial tattoo of your special birth. You grew up near the mysterious ruins of Kho and have gained an eye to discern between junk and rare artifacts and how to fix both. You are known as a tinkerer of the ancients. Consider taking crafting and magical crafting as well. You also grew up near the mysterious ruins of Kho and recognize that these artifacts are not only magical, but have monetary value. You set up a shop near the ruins (or your family has one) and peddled many magical artifacts over the years. You were born with no magical talent. Perhaps you see sorcerers as having it easy in life and went to the academy to prove yourself.

Yamasan

Much like the Lirgeni, your people were devastated by the Eye of Abendego a long time ago. Unlike the Lirgeni scholars, your people were humble farmers. Taken in by the Matanji orcs, they coexisted (with the orcs primarily being in the military while the Yamasan being the agriculture and commercial aspects of the group). At some point, a caste system developed in the group and nowadays, those at the top of the caste system are part of the merchants and political leaders while those at the bottom are in the agricultural group. You will need to pick which part of the caste system you’re from as well as how you relate to the Matanji Orcs (your sort of military), the Lirgeni (the scholars of old), and the prophecy of the Eye of Abendego (if you even care about it).
